We investigate how autonomous technologies can contribute to safer shipping, and how we can ensure the trustworthiness of such systems used in the maritime and oil&gas industries. In the big data theme, we investigate how we can use big data to make more fact-based decisions and improve performance and safe operations in the maritime, oil&gas, energy, and health industries.

Big data analytics of sensor data:

Big data is changing industries and creating entirely new industries, and we believe that the ability to create value from big data will be an important differentiator in DNV GL’s industries. This theme aims at building a competence centre for analysing large amounts of data, real-time or not real-time. This is done by collaborating with, and supporting, the business units in extracting value from data and developing data driven solution and services.

The current activities in this theme are centered on applications in maritime, offshore oil and gas, and energy industries. With applications toward these fields we build competence on technology, develop methods, software tools and prototypes for analyzing and visualizing data.

Autonomous systems in waterborne transport:

The central research questions for this activity are: Is the vision of “the autonomous driver-less commercial ship” technologically feasible? How can autonomous technologies contribute to safer shipping, reducing collisions and groundings? We believe that autonomy will be part of future solutions for making shipping safer and greener, and help reduce risk in areas like: collisions and groundings; and remote/arctic operations.

The short term goal of the project is to build an “Autonomous Boat Demonstrator”, in cooperation with the Maritime Transport Program. The objective is twofold: demonstrate and brand DNV GL’s capabilities on autonomous systems; and build a platform to experiment and answer the initial research questions below.
